Censorship in America:
  • In 1971 a man named Daniel Ellsburg gave The New York Times top secret information about the Vietnam War, called the pentagon papers. These papers revealed the secrets that the Nixon administration kept secret from the nation.

  • After the papers were published the government took it to court. This case would be known as The New York Times vs. United States supreme court case.

  • Because of these papers the supreme court case protected our first amendment (the freedom of press), revealed the corruption in government, and ended helped put an end to the Veitnam War, which saved thousands of lives.

Censorship in Germany

  • Censorship was rampant throughout Nazi Germany. Censorship ensured that Germans could only see what the Nazi hierachy wanted people to see, hear what they wanted them to hear and read what the Nazi's deemed acceptable.
  • The prime mover in censorship was the minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. It was his responisibility to see that the German's were fed with material acceptable to the Nazi state.

  1. The official name for the online censorship idea is the Golden Shield Project, which began in 1998. Critics of the project refer it to the Great fire-wall of China.
  2. During the nearly forty years (1936-1975) that Spain was ruled by successive facist governments, cultural manifestations were closely monitored and controlled by the military authority and the Roman Catholic church. (During censorship under Franco).
  3. In 1966 congress passed the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) that created provisions and procedures allowing any members of the public to obtain records of federal government agencies. (America).

  5. In 1991 the Serbian government banned Albanian as a language of instruction at all levels of education. During the period 1990-99, all libraries in Kosova were subjected to the burning or destruction of the Albanian-language collections.
