People have burned books for thousands of years simply when the books do not agree with a certain group's beliefs. Most books are burned because of conflicting religions, for the persecution of different groups of people, or for "inappropriate" content.

212BC-Chinese Emperor Shi Huang Di burned all the books in his kingdom and killed many writers so that history would start with him.
640BC- Library at Alexandria is burned
500- Almost all of the Etruscans' literature was burned, supposedly by early Christians, because it dealt with divination.
(The Etruscans were an ancient people who lived in Italy before the Romans.)
1480's- Tomas Torquemada promoted the burning of non-catholic books
1492- Arabic books were burned after the Moors were defeated at Granda, Spain.
1525-William Tyndale's English translation of the New Testament was burned
1560's-Spanish conquerers burned almost all of the Mayan's books.
1814-The Library of Congress was burned by the British and Canadians during the War of 1812.
1930's, 1940's- Nazis burned thousands of books by Jewish authors.
1948-Some New York children, overseen by priests, teachers, and parents, burned over 2,000 comic books.
1981- Sinhalese police officers in northern Sri Lanka burned the public library of Jaffna, which was the second largest library in Asia. The library also included rare ancient palm leaf volumes.
1992- The Oriental Institute was attacked by Serb nationalists who burned the whole collection, making this the largest single act of book burning in modern history.
Present day- Harry Potter books were burned in several churches in New Mexico and Iowa.
